What Our Former Students Are Saying

“Being a student at the Oxnard Japanese Language School has been a big part of my life, teaching me a lot about the Japanese language and culture. Because of this school, I am able to communicate with my family in Japan, overcoming the language barrier that would have stopped me otherwise. It also enabled me to succeed in academics too, passing the JLPT N4 test and attaining a 5 on the AP Japanese Test. I learned so much from the Oxnard Japanese Language School, and highly recommend it to those who want to learn Japanese.”

“I decided to enroll in Japanese language school because my parents and family grew up in Japan and I wanted to be able to communicate with them as best as possible! Being able to practice Japanese through a more structured program has made me a better speaker and I feel it has helped me retain communication skills even years after. I now work as a nurse and I have had several Japanese speaking patients. It has been a pleasure being able to speak and bond with them over this!”

—Misaki Fujita 藤田海咲

“I attended the Japanese school for two years. I was born and raised in Japan for 15 years and when I came to the United States, I wanted to keep my Japanese alive, so I attended OBTJLS. It was a positive experience for my education and life.”

“Having been a student at OBT JLS for 9 years, I learned valuable communication and writing skills that helped me to pass the JLPT, AP Japanese exam, and communicate with friends and family in Japan. Being fluent in Japanese has proven to be extremely helpful, specifically in 2019, when I had the opportunity to partake in the Kakehashi Project held by JACL and JICE, because I was the only person in my group who spoke Japanese. For most of the trip I was relied on to be the interpreter between our host family and group, so I am thankful for the previous years of experience speaking Japanese. Looking back, I’m grateful that I took classes at JLS versus at a community college or online school, because the classes I took heavily focused on conversation and being able to give presentations or teach a topic in Japanese, which I believe is far more practical and useful for myself in the future. My hopes are to work in Japan sometime after graduating college, so I can further improve my communication skills.”
